The Pentagon said Monday that an Islamic State leader described as “the military emir of Anbar Province” was killed another with other operatives of the terrorist group in a May 6 airstrike in Iraq.
Spokesman Peter Cook called the death of Abu Wahib another blow against the leadership of the Islamic State. “ISIL leadership has been hit hard by coalition efforts and this is an example of that,” he said.
It’s not the first time Abu Wahib was reported to have died, but this time the U.S. believes he was killed in the strike on a vehicle in which four suspected ISIL operatives were traveling.
“We’re confident this was successful strike,” Cook told reporters at the Pentagon.
Wahib has appeared in several Islamic State “execution videos” in the past, according to the Pentagon.
