Teacher union head ripped for posing with upside-down Ukrainian flag

The president of the American Federation of Teachers, Randi Weingarten, was roundly mocked on social media on Tuesday for posing with a poster of the Ukrainian flag upside down.

Weingarten and AFT Executive Vice President Evelyn DeJesus posted an image on Tuesday afternoon that showed the pair holding a yellow and blue poster supporting Ukraine.

But people were quick to point out that the poster featured a yellow bar over a blue bar, the inverse of the Ukrainian flag, which is a blue bar over a yellow bar.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was among those who weighed in, noting that not only did Weingarten and DeJesus pose with the poster, “They actually printed this sign … with the flag upside down!” Cruz finished his tweet with an emoji of the Ukrainian flag.

Several users responded to the tweet by reposting the image, but upside down, so the flag was right-side up.

Corey DeAngelis, the director of research at the American Federation for Children and an outspoken advocate for school choice policies long opposed by teachers unions, said the image was “free advertising for school choice.”

There has been an overwhelming outpouring of international support for Ukraine following the onset of the Russian invasion of the Eastern European country last month.
