Gina Raimondo to be State of the Union ‘designated survivor’

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo will be the designated survivor at this year’s State of the Union address.

Raimondo, a former Rhode Island governor and venture capitalist, will watch the speech in a remote location far from the Capitol. The traditional role is for someone in the presidential line of succession not to attend in case of a catastrophic event.

Raimondo was also absent from a photo taken by Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland of Biden’s cabinet.

The designated survivor tradition dates to the 1950s and the Cold War. Members of the president’s Cabinet are in the line of succession following the vice president, speaker of the House, and president pro tempore of the Senate.
