Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo will be the designated survivor at this year’s State of the Union address.
Raimondo, a former Rhode Island governor and venture capitalist, will watch the speech in a remote location far from the Capitol. The traditional role is for someone in the presidential line of succession not to attend in case of a catastrophic event.

We’re on the way to the Capitol for @POTUS’ first State of the Union address. After a historic year of investments to help our nation build back better, I look forward to hearing his vision for the year ahead. I am forever grateful to be a part of the Biden-Harris administration. pic.twitter.com/yeYCxpupYO

The designated survivor tradition dates to the 1950s and the Cold War. Members of the president’s Cabinet are in the line of succession following the vice president, speaker of the House, and president pro tempore of the Senate.
