DACA recipient earns deportation after transporting undocumented immigrants in high-speed chase

A Mexican national and recipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy was ordered to be deported after a high-speed chase with three undocumented immigrants in his car.

Jose Yepez-Vega, 22, was arrested in July 2018 near Laredo, Texas. Law enforcement saw Yepez-Vega’s vehicle attempt to avoid a checkpoint and began to pursue him, but he didn’t pull over and instead fled for more than 50 miles with officers from multiple jurisdictions in pursuit. KVEO reports that his vehicle reached speeds upwards of 130 mph

Yepez-Vega eventually lost control of his vehicle and was apprehended. Three undocumented immigrants were discovered in the car and admitted to paying between $4,000 and $6,000 to be smuggled into the country.

Yepez-Vega pleaded guilty in April to three counts of transporting an undocumented immigrant for financial gain, causing risk of serious bodily injury or death, and a count of conspiracy.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Diana Saldaña announced that Yepez-Vega’s DACA status has been revoked and that he would be deported back to Mexico. During the hearing, Yepez-Vega was warned not to try to come back into the United States after his deportation.
