‘Ranch Girl’ squeezes past Kirsten Gillibrand at Iowa restaurant in viral video

A woman said all she wanted was some ranch dressing as she sidled past Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand as the 2020 presidential candidate spoke to a crowd at a restaurant in Iowa this week.

That Monday interaction, which was captured on video, has since gone viral on Twitter, garnering more than 815,000 views as of Wednesday morning.

In the video, the Democratic senator from New York can be seen reaching out to the woman as she approaches, but the woman held up her hands and said, “Sorry, I’m just gonna get some ranch.” The comment was met with laughter by others in Airliner, a restaurant in Iowa City.

Off-camera, someone said that the interaction was “very Iowa.”

Since the video went viral, the woman in the video Hanna Kinney, a 22-year-old senior at the University of Iowa, has been dubbed “Ranch Girl.” In an interview with the Washington Post, she explained that she was at Airliner with her Bible study group.

“I kind of have been the designated person [to get ranch],” Kinney said Tuesday. “One, because some people are lazy, and two, I am dedicated to this ranch.”

Among those to comment on the viral moment was Meghan McCain, co-host of “The View” and daughter of the late Sen. John McCain. She called Kinney a “new folk hero.”

Gillibrand is one of around a dozen candidates competing for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.
