‘Food tampering is not a joke’: Texas man gets 30 days in jail for viral ice cream licking prank

A court has sentenced a 24-year-old Texas man to 30 days in jail for licking a tub of Blue Bell ice cream before sticking it back in a grocery store freezer in a viral video.

The court sentenced D’Adrien L’Quinn Anderson of Port Arthur, Texas, to 30 days in jail, fined him $1,000, and ordered him to pay $1,565 to Blue Bell Creameries, according to CNN. Anderson was sentenced after pleading guilty to taking part in an online fad that popped up in the summer of 2019.

Anderson was filmed taking the lid off a container of ice cream and licking its contents before replacing the tub back in the freezer. Anderson put the video online for viral popularity, copying numerous others who had posted similar videos last year.

The pranks drew laughs online but mobilized grocery stores, creameries, and local police to crack down on the pranksters. Anderson said he took the tub of ice cream back out of the freezer and bought it after the video, but his joke still caused Blue Bell to replace its entire inventory after his video was posted online.

Blue Bell is “pleased to see this matter had been resolved,” the company said in a statement. “Food tampering is not a joke, and we will not tolerate tampering with our products.”
