Yoga on the go: Twist

Now that our spine is feeling more supple thanks to last week’s dose of tranquility, let’s explore another pose (asana) that you can do on the go. Today’s dose is a yummy seated twist. This pose is perfect for energizing the spine, releasing lower back discomfort and detoxifying your system after one too many sips of an appletini.

Begin by sitting cross-legged with your spine long. Create length through the crown of your head with your shoulders stacked on top of your hips. If you aren’t comfortable in a cross-legged position on the floor (as shown in the photo), this pose can be done in a chair at your conference room table with your feet firmly planted on the floor.

Bring your hands onto your knees and connect with your breath. Let go of external distractions as you turn inward. Inhale and bring your arms along your ears (or if you’re in a public place, simply lengthen your spine). Exhale; place your left hand to your right knee and your right hand behind you as you gaze over your right shoulder. Inhale and return to the center with your arms along your ears. Exhale; place your right hand to your left knee and your left hand behind you as you gaze over your left shoulder. Repeat five to ten times on eachside. Inhale; return to the center. Exhale; place your hands onto your knees, close your eyes and bask in the sensations created by this decadent movement.

Word of caution: Avoid practicing yoga, especially twists, on a full stomach. Omwork (homework with a yogic twist): Practice this pose throughout your workday, after a stressful phone call, while flying, at the theater, and while checking out a cutie behind you at the sidewalk café. Namaste.
