Trump says he’ll be visiting Florida to inspect Hurricane Irma damage ‘very soon’

President Trump said Sunday he would be visiting Florida to inspect Hurricane Irma damage “very soon.”

“We’ll be going to Florida very soon,” Trump told reporters when he returned to the White House from Camp David, where he had received briefings on the hurricane over the weekend.

“The bad news is that this is some big monster, but I think we’re very well coordinated,” Trump added from the South Lawn, flanked by his wife Melania.

Hurricane Irma made landfall at the Florida Keys as a Category 4 storm early Sunday morning. While it has since been downgraded to a Category 3 event, wind and water continues to pummel the Sunshine State.

“The Coast Guard has been amazing already,” Trump continued. “You’ve been hearing what they’re doing right in the middle of the storm. FEMA has been incredible. We’re working very well with the governor and the other governors in the surrounding states.”

Trump visited Texas twice, as well as Louisiana, after Hurricane Harvey hit in August.

He delayed his first visit to Texas to survey the devastation wreaked by the storm until he would no longer distract from recovery efforts. “I will be going to Texas as soon as that trip can be made without causing disruption,” the president tweeted last month. “The focus must be life and safety.”
