State unveils Underground Railroad tourist guide

The Maryland Office of Tourism Development, the tourism marketing arm for the state Department of Business and Economic Development, has released its new map guide, “The Underground Railroad: Maryland?s Network to Freedom.” The guide features a collection of sites and facilities along the Underground Railroad, many of which are part of the National Park Service?s Network to Freedom. Maryland is the first state in the nation to publish a map guide of its sites in the program.

“This is just another great opportunity for us to showcase 26 venues throughout the state for the heritage tourism customer,” said Dennis Castleman, DBED?s assistant secretary for tourism, film and the arts. “We believe this type of information continues to give Maryland an advantage in the tourism market.”

Guides will be distributed by the Maryland Welcome Centers, local tourism visitor centers and at sites in the collection. Visitors can also call 800-719-5900 or visit www.visitmaryland.org.
