With the end of the world due to descend upon humanity this Friday, at least according to an interpretation of some ancient Mayan texts, what better way to greet doomsday than by having some fun?
There is no shortage of apocalypse-inspired events in celebration of that magic date Dec. 21, 2012 — the day it’s suppose to all end.
“Live it up between now and then,” advised local artist Dana Ellyn.
With Armageddon in mind, Ellyn has organized Artpocalypse. She and other area artists have created paintings revealing their thoughts on the end of the world. The pieces will be on display at the Dunes in Columbia Heights, with a party on Friday celebrating the work and doomsday.
Ellyn actually registered artpocalypse2012.com back in 2009. She initially envisioned this as a solo show, but instead recruited fellow artists to contribute as well. There will be approximately 30 pieces on display.
“I thought it would be such a fun idea,” Ellyn said.
Works range in theme, with a certain level of the macabre in many of the pieces. (It is the end of civilization, you know.)
The event will be free and include a DJ and cash bar in addition to the art on display. Ellyn expects a big turnout and festive atmosphere.
“I want it to be New Year’s Eve-ish in the sense of some countdown to midnight and ‘Yay, we’re all still here,’ ” she said.
