Hirono to join Senate Judiciary Committee

Hawaii Sen. Mazie Hirono will replace Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as a Democratic member of the Judiciary Committee.

Hirono will join the committee as it prepares to consider President-elect Trump’s forthcoming selection to fill the Supreme Court’s vacant seat created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

Hirono earned a law degree from Georgetown University and has experience working in the Hawaii attorney general’s office. Hirono said in a statement that her work on the Senate Judiciary Committee will be “instrumental” in defending civil rights, standing up for immigrant communities, and vetting Trump’s pick for the high court, in a statement.
