It appears that no family is immune from poking a bit of fun at each other, not even those of well-known public officials.
In what might be one of the worst — or depending on whom you ask, one of the best — campaign videos ever made, Nellie Lide posted a parody of a popular Saturday Night Live skit made on behalf of her brother, Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan, to the family blog, www.duncansfordoug.com.
A blog is essentially an online journal. Duncans for Doug appears to have been established by siblings as a bit of light-hearted homegrown humor. It’s a self-deprecating look at a large well-known local family in the midst of a larger-than-life gubernatorial campaign.
The video riffs on the popular skit “Lazy Sunday” by SNL comedians Chris Parnell and Andy Samburg in which the actors extoll the virtues of cupcakes and other junk foods while rapping about the movie, “The Chronicles of Narnia.”
In the Duncan version, his brother Glenn and a family friend are depicted in various sites across Maryland — in front of Middleton Tavern in Annapolis, Jerry’s Seafood restaurant in Prince George’s County and on the boardwalk in Ocean City — consuming a wide variety of food.
“He’s a winner — I need some dinner,” the men sing.
It is unclear when exactly the video was shot, but Lide wrote that it was made during the spring without her brother’s knowledge, endorsement or campaign cash.
“I don’t think he’s even seen it,” wrote Lide, who lives in Rockville.
Duncan is still on official leave from office, but he has been spending some time there during the week, said Duncan spokesman David Weaver. Duncan dropped his bid for the governor’s seat in late June, citing a battle with depression.
“Thanks to the thousands of people who have expressed their understanding and compassion towards our family,” Lide wrote in a Aug. 7 post on the site. “It’s been overwhelming.”
Lide went on to write that she will probably “still write-in Doug’s name on primary day.”
“Some of us have a hard time accepting reality,” Lide wrote.
