Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke outraised Republican Sen. Ted Cruz by $3.5 million during the first three months of the year.
Cruz raised $3.2 million in the first quarter, according to his campaign, the Texas Tribune reports. O’Rourke, who is challenging Cruz for his Texas Senate seat, raised $6.7 million in the same time.
O’Rourke’s stunning fundraising numbers, raised without PAC money, have drawn national attention as he attempts to topple Cruz. Despite O’Rourke’s numbers and the excitement he’s built in Texas, many political observers say Cruz remains in a strong position heading into the general election.
And Cruz will have help from aligned groups ready to pour money into the race in the fall.
