President Trump said he would love to see owners of NFL teams fire any player that disrespects the American flag.
“Luther and I and everyone in this arena tonight are unified by the same great American values,” Trump said at a rally for Sen. Luther Strange, who facing a runoff election in Alabama.
Led by quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a number of players took a knee starting last season during the national anthem to protest the treatment of African American and minorities in the U.S.
“We are proud of our country. We respect our flag,” Trump said on Friday. “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now. He is fired. He’s fired!'”
Roy Moore and Strange’s run-off election is next week. The successful candidate will continue to the general election to determine who will serve the remainder of the term started by former Sen. Jeff Sessions, who is now Trump’s attorney general.
