New York registers 1,000 daily coronavirus cases for first time in over two months

For the first time since early June, more than 1,000 people tested positive on a single day for the coronavirus in the state of New York.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that “of the 99,553 tests reported (Friday), 1,005 were positive.” He added that hospitalizations for the coronavirus stood at 527 and that four people died from complications with the virus.

“New Yorkers should continue the basic behaviors in the fight against COVID-19, wearing masks, socially distancing and washing hands, as we move into the fall and flu season,” the governor wrote on his official website.

According to the state’s COVID-19 tracker, the positive rate of daily testing has steadily climbed throughout September, which could be linked to the reopening of businesses and schools. Public elementary students in New York are expected back in classes next week.

New York was among the first and hardest-hit states in the entire country but had seen positive signs in the summer months after grappling with the initial surge in March and April. The 1,000 positive tests represent a 1% daily positive rate, and the state ranks among the lowest in the country at the moment, according to Johns Hopkins University’s coronavirus tracker.
