Maryland Athletic Club to open gym at Harbor East

Downtowners will be able to go from the gym to Whole Foods to work and back again starting this summer.

The Maryland Athletic Club announced today its second location in the Vue, a building currently under construction at the corner of Fleet and President streets in the 38-acre Inner Harbor East development project, a joint venture of H&S Properties Development and Struever Bros. Eccles and Rouse.

The 47,000-square-foot, $6.5 million health and wellness facility will be on the building?s second floor and will offer members four pools, 10,000 square feet of strength and cardio equipment and five exercise studios.

A wireless Internet cafe, on-site childcare and access to an 800-space parking garage are also planned for the space.

“We are one of two major anchor tenants,” MAC spokeswoman Sharon Nevins said of leasing the space in the Vue; other tenants will include a seven-screen movie theater and 131 luxury condominiums. The entire Harbor East neighborhood will have more than 800 homes and 1 million square feet of office space upon completion, as stated by the project?s Web site.

The developing neighborhood consists of high-end retailers and upscale residences.

There were 15 active home listings above $600,000 in November, according to data from MRIS, and eight active listings at or above $1,000,000.

“The new facility really caters to every age demographic,” Nevins said.

The new MAC?s aquatic facility, planned to include a warm-water therapy pool, will be the second largest in Maryland, second only to the MAC in Timonium, according to the company?s press release.

“The goal was to create a lifestyle within the MAC environment, more of a holistic lifestyle blended into the lighting and colors and textures of flooring,” said MAC?s architect Tim Sanders, of Sanders Design. “This will not be a facility where you rush in, do your weights, and rush out,” he said. “I believe there is value within good design. People want to be immersed in a good environment.”

The new MAC will employ approximately 200 people and is currently in negotiations with area corporations and tourism industry executives concerning corporate memberships and deals, she added.
