Pope Francis appoints nun to second-highest Vatican position

Pope Francis made history Thursday by appointing a woman to the second-highest position in the Vatican City government.

Sister Raffaella Petrini, a 52-year-old Italian nun, was named the secretary general of the Governatorate of the State of Vatican City, according to a report.

The position is similar to that of a deputy governor of a state and oversees Vatican City’s almost 2,000 workers and its general workings.

Petrini will watch over the tiny country’s firefighters, police, healthcare workers, museums, maintenance personnel, and office staff.

She holds degrees in law and political science and has a doctorate from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas, Vatican News reported.

The nun takes the position over from a bishop, who now serves in the state’s highest governing role, the presidency.

Petrini’s rise comes after Pope Francis pledged to increase the role of women in the Vatican’s government, according to the report.
