The salary for Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has nearly doubled during her six-year tenure on the job.
McDaniel, who was elected as chairwoman in 2017, was paid $122,582 in her first year but made $358,431 from January 2022 through November 2022, according to Federal Election Commission data.

The highest yearly salary she received from the RNC was $410,640, which she got paid in 2020. McDaniel’s recent salaries easily outstrip the $257,782 former Chairman Reince Priebus made in 2016.
Priebus was paid $152,874 in his first year on the job but never made more than $257,782 a year during his tenure, with 2015’s $201,619 being the second-highest figure.

The pay increases for McDaniel came as the GOP lost the majority in the House after the 2018 midterm elections and lost the Senate and White House after the 2020 elections. McDaniel is facing a challenge for reelection as RNC chairwoman after a lackluster showing by the GOP in the 2022 midterm elections, with Republicans only winning back the House by a narrow margin.
Republicans’ poor performance in 2022 was the latest in a series of losses the GOP has suffered while McDaniel has led the party’s primary campaigning arm.
Since Donald Trump upset Hillary Clinton in 2016, Republicans have struggled to replicate nationwide electoral success.
In the first major cycle under the leadership of Trump and McDaniel, Republicans lost their grip on the House, teeing up a historic two impeachments for the then-president. The losses continued in 2020 when Trump lost his bid to return to the White House and the party failed to win a majority in the Senate, handing unified control of the federal government to Democrats.

Republicans enjoyed modest gains in 2022, but failed to capitalize on the projected “red wave” set to sweep the country, winning a modest 10-seat majority in the House.
