First lady Melania Trump visited the Microsoft Innovation and Policy Center in Washington, D.C., on Thursday to meet with students who give feedback to the tech company about its youth-focused online safety policies.
The visit comes as part of the first lady’s promotion of her “Be Best” initiative. Trump rolled out the initiative in May, focusing on well-being, fighting opioid abuse, and behaving positively on social media, especially among children.
Fifteen students on Microsoft’s Council for Digital Good showed off their art projects expressing digital civility to the first lady. Trump also participated in a listening session with the students, where they described their 15 tenets of responsible digital behavior, the White House said.
“To see students taking action and being positive leaders in the digital world for youth is exactly what Be Best is focused on,” the first lady said in a statement
“Peer-to-peer leadership can be one of the strongest influences on our children. Using their artistic talents, these students provide unique perspectives on how youth should conduct themselves responsibly online,” the statement continued.
During her European trip with the president last week, Trump met with schoolchildren and veterans in London along with British Prime Minister Theresa May’s husband, Philip.
Trump and May toured a home for retired soldiers known as Chelsea Pensioners and chatted with schoolchildren about being kind to others.
When a student asked Trump why her motto was “Be Best,” Trump said she wants children to “be best in everything that they do … and be best with each other, to be kind.”
In June, she surprised students at the annual Students Against Destructive Decisions conference, urging them to be compassionate with one another.
