Trump dings Mark Sanford after calling him ‘nasty’ to fellow Republican lawmakers

President Trump took aim again at Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., saying he has “never been a fan of his” after he mocked the South Carolina Republican before the House Republican conference for his primary loss.

“Had a great meeting with the House GOP last night at the Capitol. They applauded and laughed loudly when I mentioned my experience with Mark Sanford. I have never been a fan of his!” Trump tweeted.

Sanford, who was elected to the House in a special election in 2013, lost the Republican primary last week to challenger Katie Arrington.

Hours before the polls closed in the state, Trump took to Twitter to lambaste Sanford and throw his support behind Arrington.

Sanford had spoken out against the president on several occassions.

Trump brought up the South Carolina Republican’s loss during a meeting with House Republicans on Tuesday evening and took a dig at him, calling Sanford a “nasty guy.”

“I want to congratulate him on running a great race,” Trump told GOP lawmakers.

Despite the president’s claims Republicans in the room “applauded and laughed loudly” in response to his comments about Sanford, GOP lawmakers said Trump’s remarks elicited boos and moans.
