RNC to review party tactics after disappointing midterm elections

The Republican National Committee is creating a council that will review the party’s tactics and strategies after the GOP experienced a disappointing midterm election.

The GOP’s expected “red wave” did not strike as hard as anticipated. Democrats secured their majority in the Senate, and Republicans are holding a much more narrow lead over the Democrats in the House than projected.

To move forward, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel announced the creation of the “Republican Party Advisory Council,” which aims to pinpoint the Republican Party’s “2024 vision and beyond,” as well as discuss new methods to appeal to Hispanic, Asian, and black voters.

“As we assess the midterms and plan for 2024, we are gathering a diverse range of respected leaders in our movement to join together and help chart a winning course in the years to come,” McDaniel said in a statement. “I am thrilled that this talented group of Republicans will be shoulder to shoulder with us as we work to grow our party, hold Democrats accountable, and elect Republicans.”

The council will include several GOP household names, such as former Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway and Family Research Council President Tony Perkins, as well as introducing several new representatives-elect.

Former Arizona Senate candidate Blake Masters, who lost to incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) in the midterm elections, is set to serve on the council, as well.

Many of the new council members agree that Republicans need to focus on communicating the message of the party more effectively to appeal to voters. Sen.-elect Katie Britt (R-AL) said she is honored to bring “fresh blood” into the GOP and help the party communicate its “conservative message.”

“We are the party of parents, families, and hardworking Americans,” Britt said in a statement. “I am going to bring the perspective of moms and dads across America to the table every single day, so that the American Dream lives on for our children and our children’s children.”

Conway said in a statement that the Democratic Party is unified on how to divide the country and that Republicans must be unified on “how best to heal a broken nation.”

“This means finishing our sentences, offering specifics and solutions, and converting the double-digit trust the GOP has earned on key issues into wins at the ballot box,” she said.

The formation of the new council comes one day after MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell announced his bid for RNC chairman. Lindell said McDaniel has “failed” as chairwoman and that Republicans need someone who “knows how to run a business” at the helm of the party.

In the past, Lindell has criticized McDaniel for not taking claims of election fraud in 2020 seriously.

“Not only am I going to win, but we are going to — it’s going to change real fast,” Lindell told Steve Bannon on his show War Room on Monday. “We’re going to get our country righted real quick.”

Another likely challenger for the head of the RNC is Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY), who lost in his bid for governor to Gov. Kathy Hochul in deep-blue New York by under 6 points. He wrote in a letter to committee members on Nov. 18 that he was “very seriously considering” their messages and calls to run for chairman.

McDaniel announced her bid for reelection on Nov. 14, and her allies are confident she will continue to serve as the head of the committee. Over 100 RNC members, out of a 168-member committee, have said they would back her, according to Politico.

The RNC leadership election is set to take place in January during the committee’s winter meeting.
