Wear your helmets, Fairfax — bike crashes on the rise

Crashes involving bicycles are rising in Fairfax as the traffic-burdened county does more to encourage the mode of transport.

Fairfax police reported 46 bike crashes in the first half of 2011, up 44 percent from 32 crashes in the first half of 2010. None of the collisions resulted in a fatality. In 59 percent of the crashes, the bicyclist was deemed at fault.

Crashes are on the rise as the county works to encourage more biking. A two-phase county-wide master plan looks first to making Tysons Corner bike-friendly as it urbanizes, and then to expanding that vision throughout the county.

By 2030, the county hopes to “achieve an overall 5 percent bicycle trip mode share for all trips types, and a 3.5 percent bicycle share for access to rail transit trips.”
