Republican Sen. Portman calls for Sessions’ recusal

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, became the third Republican senator to call for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from any Justice Department investigation into ties between Russian officials and the Trump administration.

“Jeff Sessions is a former colleague and a friend, but I think it would be best for him and for the country to recuse himself from the DOJ Russia probe,” Portman said in a brief statement Thursday morning.

The rebuke by Portman, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee who also served as a top official in the George W. Bush administration, came after Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., also called on Sessions to recuse himself after news that Sessions met with the Russian ambassador last year but failed to previously disclose the contact.
