Fox News anchor Howard Kurtz was critical of President Trump for not mentioning increased background checks during his Monday morning address to the nation.
Trump addressed the two mass shootings that occurred over the weekend in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio that left over 30 people dead on Monday. The president condemned “white supremacy” and blamed “grisly video games,” during the speech.
“Well, a moving speech by the president, I was glad he called out some of these dark social media sites where these mass murderers hang out. He unambiguously condemned white supremacy that in part in response to critics who have accused him somehow encouraging white supremacy. But there was a glaring omission, Sandra. The expectation had been raised by the president himself in tweets this morning, where he talked about the need for tighter background checks for gun purchases,” Kurtz stated.
He continued, “There was nothing about that. Just sort of a generalized call for a bipartisan solution. The president has the unique opportunity here, you will recall that early in his term, he brought in members of Congress for televised sessions, both parties, and even taunted some Republicans for being afraid of the NRA. He said he would take the heat, but then after meeting with the NRA, he decided to drop any effort for background checks, though he did follow through on the bum stocks prohibition.”
Kurtz’s criticism were based on the fact that the president brought up the idea of passing legislation to strengthen background checks early Monday morning on social media.
