Sen. Chuck Schumer said he was “shaken” by a report claiming former FBI Director James Comey said President Trump asked him to drop the probe into ousted national security adviser Mike Flynn.
“In a week full of revelation after revelation, on a day when we thought things couldn’t get any worse, they have,” Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a floor speech Tuesday evening. “I was shaken by the New York Times report that alleged the president tried to shut down an active FBI investigation into a close political associate.”
Schumer raised Monday’s Washington Post report that said Trump revealed sensitive intelligence information to Russian officials visiting the White House, and seemed to point to Republicans, who Democrats are trying to pressure to investigate or even oust Trump.
“My concerns about our national security, the rule of law, the independence of our nation’s highest law enforcement agencies are mounting,” Schumer said. “The country is being tested in unprecedented ways. I say to all of my colleagues in the Senate: history is watching.”
