Americans can expect congressional Republicans to offer a “very comprehensive” plan to simplify the tax code in the near future, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Sunday.
The Wisconsin Republican tweeted a link to a recap of a speech he delivered last week, during which he described tax reform as a “front-and-center goal” of the GOP agenda in 2016.
“We are going to roll out very comprehensive tax reform to get these rates down across the board — for all businesses, not just the big corporations like some people have argued,” Ryan told attendees last Thursday at an annual gathering of manufacturers in Racine, Wis.
“That is going to be one of the front-and-center pieces of our agenda we are going to roll out,” he added.
The House speaker doubled down on that promise in his tweet on Sunday. Ryan has positioned himself as a policy and tax expert and has vowed to make a tax plan a priority since day one of his speakership.

After Ryan and House GOP leaders fell short on past pledges to offer an alternative to Obamacare, their own immigration reform plan and a budget for this year, none of which he has offered, critics are closely watching whether the speaker can deliver.
Just before he took over as House Speaker, the 46-year-old Wisconsinite told his colleagues it would be “a relief” to voters if Congress could finally reform the tax system.
“How reassuring it would be if we actually fixed the tax code, put patients in charge of their healthcare, grew our economy, strengthened our military, lifted people out of poverty and paid down our debt,” Ryan said at the time.
