A portion of Sunday’s Super Bowl halftime show has ignited speculation that singer Jennifer Lopez attempted to use the nationally televised event to make a political statement.
At one point in the performance, a dance routine featured dozens of small children, including Lopez’s 11-year-old daughter, Emme. Some of the children were shown sitting in the middle of structures made of thin, circular metal arcs while singing Born in the USA.
Some Twitter users took the display to be a reference to immigration policies under President Trump, which allowed the detainment of migrant children and the separation of families at the United States’s southwest border with Mexico.

We got too emotional our Latinidad in this performance, we are overlooking @Shakira and @JLo political message: We still have kids in cages. Watch again. #HalftimeShow #SuperBowl, #HalftimeShow, #PepsiHalftime @julito77 @latinorebels #SuperBowlLIV @JulianCastro pic.twitter.com/Xf6uX5ferL

J. Lo made a political statement about Puerto Ricans being Americans and kids being held in ICE facilities. Some were more focused on those political and cultural statements, and others were more critical.

Neither Lopez nor co-performer Shakira has made a public statement about there being any political message behind the performances.
