Meghan McCain, daughter of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and co-host of “The View,” said that she is “nostalgic” for the old Rudy Giuliani, before he became President Trump’s lawyer.
“I am very nostalgic for the Giuliani of days past,” McCain said on Tuesday. “He used to be one of my favorite politicians. I don’t recognize this man anymore.”
McCain was reacting to Giuliani’s series of confusing statements about Trump associates meeting with Russians.
On Monday, Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, told CNN that Trump’s former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, said that there was a meeting with Trump campaign officials days before the Trump Tower meeting in June 2016, where members of the Trump campaign were promised salacious information on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
However, Giuliani claimed in a follow-up interview that the previously unreported meeting prior to the Trump Tower meeting never occurred and was made up by Cohen, who is reportedly ready to tell special counsel Robert Mueller that Trump knew that his son and campaign officials were going to meet with Russians in an effort to obtain damaging information on Clinton.
“Is he crazy like a fox to confuse all of us? Because that could be the tactic,” McCain said.
McCain also addressed Giuliani’s statements reiterating that Trump did not collude with Russia, but followed up by adding that collusion isn’t a crime.
“Colluding about Russians, I’m not sure that’s even a crime,” Giuliani said Monday. “The hacking is the crime. The president didn’t hack. He didn’t pay them for hacking.”
But McCain said that Trump’s team was moving the “goal post” on what the Trump campaign’s actions were with Russians.
“They’re moving the goal post,” McCain said. “They’re doing it right now and we shouldn’t be gaslit into thinking differently.”
Mueller is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and if the Trump campaign colluded with the Kremlin. Trump has maintained that no collusion occurred between his campaign and Russia — and he echoed Giuliani Tuesday, tweeting “Collusion is not a crime” — and has condemned Mueller’s probe as a “witch hunt.”
