Quinnipiac: Donald Edges Hillary in Swing States

A new Quinnipiac poll shows Hillary Clinton losing her lead in swing states.

The new numbers suggest Clinton’s scandals are making her lose important ground to Donald Trump. “With a drop in grades on honesty and moral standards, Democrat Hillary Clinton loses an 8-point lead over Republican Donald Trump in Florida, and finds herself in too-close-to-call races in the three critical swing states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, according to a Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll released today.”

Even though Trump has a big lead in Florida, voters think Clinton is more intelligent (52 to 35 percent) and better prepared to be president (53 to 37 percent). However, voters think Trump is more trustworthy—50 to 37 percent, up from 43 to 40 percent a few weeks ago. The two are also tied at 42 percent on who voters think has higher moral standards. But just a few weeks ago, Clinton led on that, 47 to 36 percent. Voters also say Trump is a stronger leader. The numbers in Ohio and Pennsylvania are similar.

Voters in all three states say Trump would be better at creating jobs and dealing with ISIS. On immigration those numbers for both candidates hover near 47 percent each, with Trump edging out Clinton in Florida, and the reverse in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The poll was conducted between June 30 and July 11. During that time, two big national events occurred. First, on July 5, FBI director Comey condemned Clinton handling of classified information while secretary of state, calling it “extremely careless.” Second, on July 7, five Dallas police officers were fatally shot. At least one of these events has obviously had a devastating impact on Clinton’s poll numbers in key states.

The Real Clear Politics poll averages are: Clinton 46 to Trump’s 44 percent in Pennsylvania, a 44 percent tie in Florida, and Clinton 45 to Trump’s 43 percent in Ohio.
