Laredo Border Patrol reports over 1,000% uptick in arrests of criminal migrants

Border Patrol agents in charge of the Laredo, Texas, region on Thursday reported that arrests of criminal migrants have jumped nearly 1,200% in the last year.

Since the start of the fiscal year, a total of 760 criminal migrants have been brought into custody, compared to 60 who were arrested over the same time period last year.

“These arrests continue to highlight the dangers that illegal immigration poses to our country,” the Border Patrol said in a statement. “Dangerous criminals such as these endanger our communities by showing a lack of regard for our country’s laws. The agents of the Laredo Sector are committed to their duties of protecting the American people, safeguarding our borders, and enhancing the Nation’s economic prosperity.”

The revelation was included in a press release that announced the Tuesday arrest of a gang member who was residing in a stash house in South Laredo. Fidel Alexis Lopez-Mendoza, 20, a Mexican national and a member of the Sureno Gang, had previously faced charges of robbery, battery, interference with emergency communication, and theft of property.

Border authorities in Del Rio, Texas, on May 26 announced their sector had experienced a 3,166% increase in the apprehension of convicted sex offenders, compared to numbers from the same time frame last year. A total of 95 border crossers previously found guilty of sexual crimes have been apprehended in the area so far.

The shocking figures were included in a bulletin, which stated that agents caught 10 convicted sex offenders who illegally entered the United States from May 17 to May 24. Among them were Mexican nationals who had been found guilty of lewd and lascivious acts with a child, forcible sexual abuse, sexual assault of a child under 14, sexual assault of a child, sexual assault, and sexual conduct with a person under 13.

Two Honduran nationals were arrested in the one-week period as well. The pair had a litany of convictions, including statutory rape and second-degree sexual assault of a child.

President Joe Biden has faced bipartisan backlash for his handling of the crisis on the southern border. In April, agents witnessed more than 178,000 attempted illegal crossings, dwarfing previous numbers. A wave of unaccompanied migrant children has overwhelmed those in Biden’s cohort as the federal government scrambles to open new facilities to house the surge.
