Md. Senate passes increase in alcohol sales tax

ANNAPOLIS — The Maryland Senate approved a bill that would increase the state’s sales tax on alcohol by 50 percent, adding roughly 30 cents to every $10 of alcohol sold by fiscal 2014.

The Senate passed the measure in a 27-19 vote on Wednesday morning. The bill now goes to the House of Delegates for consideration.

The measure would gradually increase the sales tax on alcohol from 6 percent to 9 percent over three years, ranking Maryland’s alcohol sales tax as one of the highest in the mid-Atlantic region by fiscal 2014, with the exception of the District of Columbia.
