Oman takes 10 Gitmo prisoners

Ten former Guantanamo Bay inmates were transferred to Oman, marking President Obama’s latest effort to get as many prisoners as possible out of the facility before leaving office.

The Washington Post reported the Omani government said the prisoners were transferred for humanitarian reasons. About 40 inmates will remain in Guantanamo Bay when President-elect Trump takes office on Friday.

The Post reported the Obama administration is trying to move a group of 19 inmates before Obama leaves office. The detainees are going to Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Italy.

While Obama will not be able to completely shut down the facility before he leaves office, which was one of his central campaign promises from 2008, he will have transferred 179 prisoners out of the facility.

Republican lawmakers have blasted Obama’s transfers out of the prison and stymied his attempts to close it for good.
