NFL bitten by crypto bug as Cowboys announce historic partnership

The Dallas Cowboys announced Wednesday the NFL’s first-ever cryptocurrency partnership with a team.

The deal with Blockchain.com includes club space inside AT&T Stadium, advertising opportunities, rights to social and digital integration, and an “educational summit” in which fans can learn about digital asset spaces, according to the team website.

“I know a little bit about being wise when it comes to a dollar,” Cowboys owner and president Jerry Jones said at a press conference, according to CBSDFW. “And wouldn’t you know, I’ve had my share of mess-ups, too, but I do have some instincts. Blockchain.com is going to be the way to go in this country, and the Dallas Cowboys are going to put everything we’ve got behind it to make it a household word.”

Cryptocurrency has been growing in popularity among players in the NFL, including Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who have said they would be paid, at least in part, in cryptocurrency.

“As another founder whose leading my business and building my business, it’s incredibly important not just to be partnered with the best brands and the best teams in America, but it’s important for me to be partnered with teams that are led by the founders,” Blockchain CEO and co-owner Peter Smith said. “It’s incredibly exciting and an honor to be partnered with the Dallas Cowboys.”

Fans cannot yet use the cryptocurrency at AT&T Stadium during games, and Jones said players with the Cowboys are not allowed to have their compensation in cryptocurrency, citing early rules established by the NFL for how clubs could partner with cryptocurrency firms. However, fans can win exclusive experiences and trips to away games and events hosted by the team, according to the team website.
