Secret Service detains man who approached White House with suspicious package

Secret Service officers have detained a man who approached the White House earlier Tuesday morning with a suspicious package, which led to a security scare that lasted about an hour.

A Secret Service spokesman told reporters that the man in custody approached a uniformed officer around 10:15 a.m. and made “suspicious comments” about a package he had. The man was immediately detained and an explosives team was sent to investigate the package.

Media and visitors were evacuated from the North Lawn around 10:30 a.m. and a secure perimeter was established around the White House complex. The spokesman said East Wing tours have been temporarily suspended.

President Trump was holding a listening session with members of the Fraternal Order of Police at the time the incident took place.

At 11:40 a.m. the Secret Service spokesman said all White House activity besides public tours could continue as normal. The agency is expected to post a photo of the suspect in custody to their Twitter account shortly.
