Schumer met with Kansas author to discuss 2020 Senate run

Author Sarah Smarsh met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., last month and discussed the possibility of a bid for a U.S. Senate seat in Kansas in the 2020 election, according to a new report.

Smarsh, the author of Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth, said that she’s spoken to Schumer, Democratic presidential candidates, and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada about launching a Senate bid.

“Conversations have made it clear that, as a proud product of rural America, a longtime chronicler of Kansas for a national audience, and a progressive woman who was raised in a moderately conservative environment, I am a cultural bridge person who would offer voters a unique option in the race,” Smarsh said, according to the Kansas City Star.

Schumer’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.

Kansas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in more than 80 years. However, Democrat Laura Kelly became governor of the state earlier this year.
