The gubernatorial campaign for scandal-ridden New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is scheduled to host a pricey fundraising event in New York City this summer as the number of 2022 challengers grows.
Admission into the “summer reception” event in support of the governor’s reelection campaign requires a contribution of $10,000 per person, or $15,000 for a pair, according to an invite on the campaign’s website. The contributions are said to be made payable to “Andrew Cuomo for New York.”
The invitation does not disclose where the event will be held but says it will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29. It also includes a credit card payment portal for contributions and welcomes prospective guests to contact the campaign for additional details.
ANDREW CUOMO SET TO RAKE IN MORE THAN $5M FROM PANDEMIC BOOK DEAL: REPORT
Several challengers have announced campaigns to unseat Cuomo in 2022, including Andrew Giuliani, the son of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Republican New York Rep. Lee Zeldin is also set to campaign against Cuomo, as will Lewis County Sheriff Michael Carpinelli.
June’s fundraiser follows a number of scandals, investigations, and criticisms from lawmakers in both parties that plague the three-term Democratic governor, who has been in office since 2011.
Cuomo has been accused by 10 women of sexual harassment, and those allegations are being investigated by both New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, both Democrats. On March 11, Heastie announced he authorized an “impeachment investigation” into the allegations against Cuomo.
A recent report revealed that James broadened her investigation into the sexual harassment allegations against Cuomo to include an examination of claims that an adviser of his tied counties’ access to COVID-19 shots to their support for the governor.
Both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department are also reportedly investigating how Cuomo managed New York’s nursing homes and COVID-19 death data after a report from James’s office found nursing home deaths due to the virus were undercounted.
Calls for Cuomo to resign amid the sum of scandals have not only come from Republicans but Democrats as well, including the state’s two Democratic U.S. senators, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.
