Jill Biden chooses Kelly Clarkson for first solo broadcast interview as first lady

Kelly Clarkson has been waiting a lifetime for a moment like this.

The Texas-born singer will sit down with first lady Jill Biden for her first solo broadcast interview since President Biden assumed office in January.

The “socially distant” interview, slated for an NBC daytime television spot, will take place later this month and air on Thursday, Feb. 25, according to a press release. Biden will join Clarkson on the traveling set of Emmy Award-winning talk show The Kelly Clarkson Show in the East Room of the White House.

During the interview spot, the first lady will join Clarkson and musical director Jason Halbert to participate in a “special Kellyoke” performance.

Biden will also discuss with Clarkson her “continued commitment to education, military families, cancer research and bringing the country together,” the press release said.

Starting her teaching career as an English teacher in Wilmington, Delaware, Biden has dedicated her focus to advancing education opportunities across the nation. Beginning her work as the second lady in 2008 during the Obama administration, her goal was to “underscore the critical role of community colleges in the nation’s economy.”

“Teaching isn’t just what I do. It’s who I am,” Biden said of her focus while in the White House.

The press release added that the singer and the first lady will answer questions from The Kelly Clarkson Show’s live virtual audience and everyday people working together to achieve “extraordinary things in their communities.”

Clarkson is known for her victory on the first season of American Idol in 2002, and she has worked with popular record labels such as RCA Records. Her debut single was A Moment Like This in 2002. Clarkson is also a judge and coach on NBC’s singing competition, The Voice.

The pop singer has also expressed some political preferences over the years, having voiced support for former Texas Rep. Ron Paul’s 2012 presidential candidacy before endorsing former President Barack Obama, whom she called “a great guy,” and performing at his inauguration on Jan. 20, 2013.
