Nike is rolling out a performance hijab for Muslim women athletes

Nike will start selling a performance hijab for Muslim women athletes starting spring 2018, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

The process of designing the “Nike Pro Hijab” took 13 months and was born out of complaints from athletes about competing in standard head scarfs. The hijab has a single-layer pull-on design. It will be made from lightweight polyester in dark and neutral colors. The fabric will contain small holes throughout so that it is breathable while being worn.

United Arab Emirates figure skater Zahra Lari has worn the exact performance hijab while skating and is excited about its rollout to the international market.

“I was thrilled and a bit emotional to see Nike prototyping a Hijab,” Lari told CNN Money. “I’ve tried so many different hijabs for performance … so few of them actually work for me. But once I put it on and took it for a spin on the ice, I was blown away by the fit and the light weight.”
