Study: D.C. breast cancer rates among nation’s highest

The Breast Cancer Mortality Report, a new study released Thursday by Susan G. Komen for the Cure, found the District’s 33.7 percent mortality rate among breast cancer patients is well above the 26 percent national average and second only to Louisiana among the 50 states. And D.C. stands alone in breast cancer incidence — 147.8 per 100,000 residents, according to the report. Interviewees reported a lack of coordinated services and long waits for mammograms and follow-up appointments. The city recently issued a cancer control plan to fight the epidemic.
