Former President Donald Trump is set to hold a rally in Arizona on Jan. 15, the same day that the family of Martin Luther King Jr. will arrive in Phoenix for its own rally.
Jan. 15 marks what would have been the 93rd birthday of the slain civil rights leader. The family of Martin Luther King Jr. plans to launch a nationwide campaign that day to press Congress to pass legislation to enhance and protect voting rights.
Jannah Scott, with the African American Christian Clergy Coalition, will join the King family in Phoenix and told AZCentral that Congress will dishonor King’s legacy if it does not pass voting reform legislation.
“President Biden, Congressmembers, our own senators: (Democratic Sens. Kyrsten) Sinema, (and Mark) Kelly … don’t get up on stages and talk about the greatness of America and how Dr. King did this, that, and the other without honoring his legacy,” Scott said. “Don’t celebrate him without passing the legislation he died for.”
Trump has spoken against the two voting bills currently stalled in Congress, the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.
Last month, the former president told Fox Business that the legislation is designed to make it easier for Democrats.

“They have a so-called voting rights bill, which is a voting rights for Democrats, because Republicans will never be elected again if that happens, if that passes,” Trump said.
Trump’s Save America political action committee announced Trump will speak at 7 p.m. on Jan. 15 in a campaign-style rally. The event will be held at the Canyon Moon Ranch, which is about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix in Florence, Arizona.
Jan. 15 will be his first appearance in Arizona since July 24 when he held a two-hour rally affirming his claim that election fraud took place on Nov. 3, 2020.
