Drug ring leaders sentenced to life

Three leaders of a narcotics ring that operated in D.C., Maryland and Virginia were each sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of release, federal prosecutors said.

Gerald Eiland, 37, of Alexandria, Frederick “Toby” Miller, of Oxon Hill, and Timothy Thomas, 57, of D.C., controlled an organization that smuggled cocaine, heroin into the area, processed and packaged those drugs and sold them on the streets of D.C. – Scott McCabe

Chemical smugglers convicted

Two Maryland men were convicted in federal court Wednesday for arranging to smuggle volatile PCP chemicals on commercial airliners, placing the planes and passengers at risk, according to U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of Columbia.

Troy Hopkins, 31, of Lanham, and John Downs III, 29, of Annapolis, used female drug couriers from California to carry PCP hidden in their checked luggage on flights to Dulles International Airport.

Hopkins faces 20 years to life in prison; Downs faces 10 years to life, authorities said. – Scott McCabe

Elderly woman robbed in home invasion

Montgomery County Police are investigating a Chevy Chase robbery that occurred in the 5500 block of Montgomery Street at 1 a.m. Tuesday. According to a release, a 77-year-old woman was at home alone when her lights went out.

When she went to check her fuse box, a man, between 18 and 23 years old, struck her and pushed her to the ground. He restrained her and demanded money. When he went upstairs, she freed herself and fled to a neighbor’s house to call the police. The suspect escaped with personal property from the home. -Kashmir Hill
