Maine erases Christopher Columbus from calendar — Christopher Columbus is believed to be from Genoa, and Italian-Americans were the ones who first lobbied for a Columbus Day celebration in the U.S. (Wikipedia)

Gov. Janet Mills signed a bill Friday to abolish Columbus Day.

Maine will keep the day a state holiday but will now celebrate it as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
