Could Grasmick’s replacement be in our own backyard?

Maryland school officials are planning to hire a search firm to conduct a national hunt for its next superintendent, as Nancy Grasmick retires after a two-decade reign over the nation’s top-ranked school system.

The Maryland State Board of Education said it would cast a national net, The Baltimore Sun reported. Board members did not comment on how long the search would last.

When Grasmick announced her retirement late last month, we began to wonder — hey, Jerry Weast is retiring in June from Montgomery County Public Schools. He’s also a long-serving superintendent (12 years) and has plenty of notches on the awards belt.

Could he be interested in the state superintendent spot?

“Dr. Weast is not pursuing a next job right now,” spokesman Dana Tofig told us shortly after Grasmick’s announcement. “He’s not even talking about it. I really wouldn’t know.”

The Montgomery school board and select community members interviewed three finalists for Weast’s replacement last week, but all are keeping mum on how it’s shaking out.

Board members did say, however, that they’re confident their next superintendent will be picked and ready to go before Weast leaves the school system.
