Even if you’re not a math teacher, $10K is a whole lot of zeros

Three Washington-area teachers were honored by President Obama on Thursday for excellence in math and science education.

In D.C., both the charter schools and D.C. Public Schools got the nod: Lisa Suben, who teaches fifth-grade math at Kipp DC, and Lauren Tate, a second-grade science teacher at Watkins Elementary, received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Montgomery County Public Schools’ Joseph Robles, a fifth-grade math teacher at Rolling Terrace Elementary, also won the recognition, which includes a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

“The teachers we honor today have demonstrated uncommon skill and devotion in the classroom, nurturing the young minds of tomorrow’s science and math leaders,” Obama said. “America’s competitiveness rests on the excellence of our citizens in technical fields, and we owe these teachers a debt of gratitude for strengthening America’s prosperity.”
