House Speaker Paul Ryan, elected to a 10th term in Wisconsin’s 1st District, said he is watching the polls hopefully as they show the possibility of the GOP retaining the Senate and Donald Trump possibly capturing the White House.
“By some accounts this could be a really good night for America,” Ryan, a Republican, told a crowd in Janesville, Wis., which is his home town. “This could be a really good night for us. Fingers crossed.”
Ryan did not mention the Republican nominee, who he endorsed earlier this year but then rebuked a few weeks ago after a leaked video showed Trump making lewd comments about women 11 years ago.
The House is expected to remain under GOP control and Ryan said he’ll run for speaker, although a tighter margin may make it more difficult for him to win over conservatives who in recent years have voted against their party speaker.
Ryan didn’t mention the speaker’s gavel in his acceptance speech but told the crowd, “I’m so eager to get back to work for you.”
