Former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper on Sunday closed the door to running for a Senate seat as he mulls a potential 2020 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination,
Hickenlooper told reporters he has been approached by Democratic leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., about running against Republican Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., in 2020.
“I’m not cut out to be a senator,” Hickenlooper said while campaigning in Iowa on Saturday, according to Politico. “Senators don’t build teams. Senators sit and debate in small groups, which is important, right? But I’m not sure that’s my — I’m a doer. That’s what gives me joy.”
The former governor said in late January he would decide in the coming weeks whether to jump into the 2020 race, but was “leaning” toward running.
“I think I’m the one person out there that could show again and again and again the ability to bring people together,” Hickenlooper said told Iowa voters Saturday.
Hickenlooper shared the Iowa campaign trail this weekend with Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, who have all announced they’re running for president.
