White House communications director Alyssa Farah announced her resignation on Thursday, another sign that top West Wing officials are recognizing defeat even as President Trump refuses to concede the 2020 contest.
Farah, who is still finalizing her departure date, told the Washington Examiner that her plan was to leave following the election, which was one month ago, and will be setting up a consulting firm focused on political communications and defense.
She was seen touring the West Wing offices to make her goodbyes Thursday afternoon. “Don’t be strangers,” she said to staff in the lower press office.
Farah, 31, began her work in the White House as the press secretary to Vice President Mike Pence. She went on to work as press secretary for the Defense Department last September. She returned to the White House in April of this year. Farah is the first person to work in three roles in a single administration and the youngest Pentagon press secretary.
“After three and a half incredible years, I will be leaving the White House to pursue new opportunities,” Farah wrote in a statement. “It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve in the Trump Administration over the last three and a half years, first as Press Secretary to Vice President Pence, then as Press Secretary for the Department of Defense, and most recently as White House Communications Director. I am deeply proud of the incredible things we were able to accomplish to make our country stronger, safer, and more secure.”
Farah also praised the Trump administration for its foreign and domestic policy accomplishments, including its targeted attacks against ISIS, its facilitation of peace deals in the Middle East, and its stance on NATO.
“We delivered historic tax cuts, putting money back into the pockets of hard working Americans. We rebuilt the judiciary with Constitution abiding independent jurists and we worked to create the most inclusive economy in American history — that gives every citizen a real chance to achieve the American dream,” she said. “Finally, I’m honored to have worked with the entire team on Operation Warp Speed who helped usher in a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine in record time that will save countless thousands of lives. I’m forever grateful to have had the opportunity to serve my country.”
