My Polish is a bit rusty, but Ben Smith finds a translator: “I have unofficial information that president Obama will come, there will be also presidents of France and Russia,” said Mayor Jacek Majchrowski.
This is the right thing to do, I believe. Poland has been a great friend and ally. They have supported our military in the war, have stood up to Russian aggression, and have supporter U.S. missile defense systems. Additionally, Poland is flowering, young democracy, a model for nations formerly under Soviet rule. The appropriate thing is to express American support of the Polish people by attending the funeral. And, assuming this report is true, I’m glad to see that President Obama will do just that.
This slideshow, provided by the Boston Globe, gives a good sense of the mood in Poland. It’s truly heart wrenching.
