Sirhan Sirhan, the Palestinian man who assassinated Robert F. Kennedy in 1968, was stabbed at a California prison on Friday, according to TMZ.
Citing law enforcement sources, TMZ reported that Sirhan, 75, was stabbed at about 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon in the prison yards at the Richard. J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California.
Law enforcement officials told TMZ that correctional officers responded to the incident and found Sirhan with stab wounds severe enough that he had to be transported to a local hospital to receive treatment. He is reportedly in stable condition.
TMZ said the suspected assailant has been identified and “placed in isolation.” An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Sirhan shot and killed Kennedy with a .22 caliber revolver at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after the New York senator addressed a crowd of supporters following his victory in the California presidential primary on June 5, 1968.
Sirhan was convicted of murder in 1969 and sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life in prison three years later.
