Activists disrupt GOP rally for Neil Gorsuch

Left-leaning opponents of Judge Neil Gorsuch’s interrupted a Republican rally on Wednesday, as GOP senators tried to call on Democrats to support President Trump’s pick to be the next Supreme Court justice.

Protesters carrying signs that the People for the American Way logo tried to shout down Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, with the message, “Neil’s a bad deal.”

The protests took place less than a week before the Senate is expected to start moving on the nomination. The Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to vote on the nominee Monday, and the Senate is expected to consider try to vote on his confirmation by Friday, April 7.

Lee and Cruz were joined by Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. The GOP senators predicted Gorsuch would be confirmed, despite plans by Democrats to filibuster the pick.

“I’m here to tell you he’s going to be on the Supreme Court because he’s earned the right to be there,” Graham said of Gorsuch. “The only question is how, it’s not even when.”

“To my Democratic colleagues, if he can’t get 60 votes, Neil Gorsuch, that tells me that you don’t care about qualifications,” Graham added.

“All I know is what I heard yesterday that [Democrats] would not filibuster,” Grassley said. “I think we heard from Heitkamp and Leahy and one other one, I forget what the other one was, but we haven’t asked who’s going to vote.”
